Exponent Calculator

Raise a finite number to an integer power, including zero and negative exponents.

Calculations happen locally. We do not send your values to our server.

Example

A base of 2 and exponent 10 gives 1,024. A base of 2 and exponent −3 gives 0.125, which is the reciprocal of 2³.

Calculation method

The calculator raises the entered finite base to an integer exponent. A zero exponent returns 1. A negative exponent computes one divided by the corresponding positive power.

Important notes

Exponents are limited to integers from −1,000 to 1,000. Results that overflow to infinity or underflow to zero are rejected. Floating-point rounding may be visible for some decimal bases.

Separate the base from the exponent

The base is the number being multiplied repeatedly; the exponent gives the number of factors for a positive whole-number power. A base of 3 and exponent 4 means 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81, not 3 × 4. Enter the sign as part of the base when you intend to raise a negative number to a power.

Use parity and reciprocals to check the answer

A negative base produces a negative result for odd integer exponents and a positive result for even ones. A negative exponent takes a reciprocal: 2^-3 = 1/(2 × 2 × 2) = 0.125. Nonzero numbers raised to zero give 1. The calculator also returns 1 for 0^0 by its numerical convention; that convention is not a conclusion about a calculus limit.

Recognize when another tool is needed

Use the scientific calculator for roots, fractional exponents or a full expression. This tool accepts integer exponents from -1000 to 1000 and displays up to 15 significant digits. Decimal bases and very large integer results can be rounded. An overflow or complete underflow is an error, and zero with a negative exponent is rejected because it requires division by zero.

Frequently asked questions

What does a negative exponent mean?

A negative exponent means a reciprocal: a⁻ⁿ equals 1 divided by aⁿ. Zero cannot be raised to a negative exponent because that would require division by zero.

Can this calculate roots or fractional exponents?

No. This focused tool accepts integer exponents only. Use the Scientific Calculator for roots and more general expressions.

Why is a very large result rejected?

Browser numbers have a finite range. The tool rejects infinity and values rounded completely to zero so it does not present them as meaningful finite results.
