Split Bill & Expense Calculator

Split group expenses equally and calculate who pays whom after accounting for everyone’s contributions.

Calculations happen locally. We do not send your values to our server.

Example

Alex pays 90, while Sam and Taylor pay 0. Each owes a share of 30, so Sam pays Alex 30 and Taylor pays Alex 30.

Calculation method

Amounts are converted into integer smallest currency units before addition and division. The total is split equally among all listed participants. Paid amounts minus shares determine balances, and transfers connect people who owe money to people who should receive it.

Important notes

Use one currency; no exchange rates or unequal shares are applied. Select 0, 2, or 3 decimal places. Remainders are allocated one smallest currency unit at a time in participant order. Suggested transfers settle balances but do not guarantee the fewest possible payments.

Enter payments, not outstanding debts

Create one participant per person and enter the total each has already paid toward the shared expenses. Include people who paid nothing with an amount of zero. Do not enter proposed repayments as additional expenses: doing so would increase the shared total. This tool assumes everyone owes an equal share of every included expense.

Follow the settlement direction

A positive balance means the person paid more than their share and should receive money. A negative balance means they should pay. Follow each arrow from payer to recipient. If Alex paid 60 and Sam paid 30 for three people including Taylor, all owe 30; Taylor pays Alex 30, and Sam needs no transfer. These payments settle the recorded group expense without changing its total.

Agree how to allocate the last cent

Select the currency’s decimal places before calculating. At two decimal places, 10.00 split three ways becomes 3.34, 3.33 and 3.33 in participant order. Changing that order changes who receives the extra smallest unit. Agree on the order with the group. Use separate calculations for different currencies or expenses that involve different participants.

Example · Calculation method
ExampleResult
90.00 ÷ 330.00 + 30.00 + 30.00
10.00 ÷ 33.34 + 3.33 + 3.33
100 ÷ 334 + 33 + 33
1.000 ÷ 30.334 + 0.333 + 0.333

Frequently asked questions

Can I include someone who paid nothing?

Yes. Enter their name and a paid amount of zero. They still receive an equal share of the group’s total costs.

How are amounts that do not divide evenly handled?

For a total of 10.00 shared by three people at two decimal places, the shares are 3.34, 3.33, and 3.33 in listed order. The shares and repayments always reconcile in smallest currency units.

Does this send payments or save group accounts?

No. It only calculates a settlement plan in your browser. It does not move money, store names, manage balances across visits, or provide a shared account. Copying results is optional; sharing sends only the page link.
