Length Converter

Convert between millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, yards and miles using exact international factors.

Calculations happen locally. We do not send your values to our server.

Example

1 mile is exactly 1.609344 km, and 5,280 feet is exactly 1 mile. A height of 6 feet is exactly 182.88 cm, while 1.8 m is about 5.90551181 ft and 10 km is about 6.21371192 miles.

Calculation method

Every value is converted through meters using the exact international definitions: an inch is 25.4 mm, a foot is 0.3048 m, a yard is 0.9144 m and a mile is 1,609.344 m. Results are shown with up to 8 decimal places, so trailing digits come from rounding the display rather than an approximate factor.

Important notes

The mile here is the international statute mile, not the nautical mile of 1,852 m used at sea and in aviation, and the retired US survey foot differed slightly from the international foot. Traditional units such as the Japanese shaku or the Chinese chi have their own separate definitions.

Exact definitions behind the numbers

Choose the unit you have and the unit you need. Every value is converted through meters using exact international definitions: an inch is 25.4 mm, so a foot is 0.3048 m, a yard is 0.9144 m and a mile is 1,609.344 m. That is why 1 mile is exactly 1.609344 km and 5,280 feet is exactly 1 mile. Results are shown with up to eight decimal places, so tiny trailing digits come from rounding the display rather than from an approximate factor.

Heights and distances people actually convert

A height of 6 feet is exactly 182.88 cm. Going the other way, 1.8 m is about 5.90551181 ft; the decimal part of a foot is not inches, so multiply 0.90551181 by 12 to get about 10.87 inches, or roughly 5 ft 10.9 in. Running distances convert the same way: 10 km is about 6.21371192 miles and a marathon of 42.195 km is about 26.21875746 miles, usually quoted as 26.2. A 100 m sprint is about 109.36 yards.

Units that are not included

The mile here is the international statute mile. Nautical miles, used at sea and in aviation, are 1,852 m and are not in this list, and the US survey foot, now retired for most purposes, differed slightly from the international foot. Traditional units such as the Japanese shaku or the Chinese chi also have separate definitions. For converting speeds such as km/h and knots, use the Speed Converter, and for areas like square feet, use the Area Converter rather than squaring these results by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the decimal part of a foot not inches?

Because a foot is divided into 12 inches, not 100. 1.8 m converts to about 5.90551181 ft, so multiply 0.90551181 by 12 to get roughly 10.87 inches, which reads as about 5 ft 10.9 in. Reading the decimal directly as inches would put the height nearly an inch out.

How exact are the results?

The factors are exact by definition, so 1 mile really is 1.609344 km and 5,280 ft is exactly 1 mile rather than a rounded value. Only the displayed number is rounded, at up to 8 decimal places, which is far finer than any tape measure you are likely to use.

How do running distances convert?

The same way as any other length. 10 km is about 6.21371192 miles, a marathon of 42.195 km is about 26.21875746 miles — usually quoted as 26.2 — and a 100 m sprint is about 109.36 yards, or 109.36132983 to the full precision shown. For speeds such as km/h and knots, use the Speed Converter instead.
