Tip Calculator

Calculate a tip from the bill and a percentage, then see the total and an even per-person share for any group size.

Calculations happen locally. We do not send your values to our server.

Example

A 47 bill with a 20% tip adds 9.40, for a total of 56.40. A 100 bill with a 15% tip comes to 115, or 57.50 each for two people, and 84.60 with an 18% tip is 99.83 in total, shown as 33.28 each for three.

Calculation method

The tip is the bill amount multiplied by the tip percentage and divided by 100, and the total is the bill plus that tip. The per-person share divides the total by the number of people, so everyone pays the same share of the bill and the tip. Amounts are shown with up to two decimal places, while the calculation keeps the exact values.

Important notes

Rounded shares may not add back to the total: 99.83 split three ways is exactly 33.276 each, displayed as 33.28, and three payments of 33.28 make 99.84. Whether to tip on the pre-tax subtotal or the final bill, and whether a service charge is already included, depends on local custom.

Choose the amount you want to tip on

Enter the bill amount you want to use as the tip base, the tip percentage and the number of people. A 47 bill with a 20% tip adds 9.40 for a total of 56.40. Local custom decides whether the base is the pre-tax subtotal or the final bill, and whether a service charge already printed on the receipt should be tipped again. If a service charge is listed, compare it with your intended tip before adding more.

Splitting a bill and the leftover cent

The per-person figure divides the bill plus tip evenly. A 100 bill with a 15% tip is 115, or 57.50 each for two people. With three people, 84.60 plus an 18% tip is 99.83 in total, displayed as 33.28 each. Three payments of 33.28 add up to 99.84, one cent more than the total, because the exact share is 33.276. Decide in advance whether one person pays one cent less or everyone rounds up.

When an equal split is not fair

An even split assumes everyone shares the whole bill. If people ordered very different amounts, calculate each person’s own subtotal with the tip percentage instead, or use the Split Bill & Expense Calculator when several people have already paid. For a quick mental check, 10% moves the decimal point one place, so 10% of 100 is 10, and doubling it gives 20%. With three people, 110 appears as 36.67 each, which totals 110.01 when paid separately.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

It depends on local custom and personal preference. Many people in the United States tip on the pre-tax subtotal, while elsewhere a tip may be optional or already covered by a service charge. Enter whichever amount you want to use as the base; the tool applies the percentage to exactly that figure.

What should we do about the leftover cent when splitting?

Agree on it before paying. With three people and 110 in total, each share shows 36.67, and three payments add up to 110.01. Either one person pays one cent less, or everyone rounds up and the extra cent becomes part of the tip.

Is an even split fair when people ordered different amounts?

Not always. An even split assumes everyone shares the whole bill. If orders differ a lot, work out each person’s subtotal and apply the same tip percentage to it, or use the Split Bill & Expense Calculator when several people have already paid different amounts.
