Time Duration Calculator

Calculate the elapsed hours and minutes between two clock times, including overnight spans that finish after midnight.

Calculations happen locally. We do not send your values to our server.

Example

09:00 to 17:30 is 8 h 30 min, or 510 minutes in total. A night shift from 22:15 to 06:45 is also 8 h 30 min, and a meeting from 13:05 to 14:50 lasts 1 h 45 min, which is 105 minutes.

Calculation method

Each time is converted into minutes after midnight, so 17:30 becomes 17 × 60 + 30 minutes. The start is subtracted from the end; if the end is earlier than the start, one full day of 1,440 minutes is added first, because the span is assumed to finish the next day. The minutes are then split into whole hours and remaining minutes, and the total in minutes is shown as well.

Important notes

Only clock times are entered, so the result is always less than 24 hours: identical start and end times give 0 minutes, not a full day. Breaks are not subtracted, and a night that includes a daylight saving change is not adjusted, so a real shift from 22:15 to 06:45 on that night can be one hour longer or shorter.

Enter clock times in 24-hour form

Type the start and end as clock times. 09:00 to 17:30 is 8 h 30 min, and the tool also shows the total as 510 minutes. The total-minute figure is convenient for billing in minutes or checking a timetable: 13:05 to 14:50 is 1 h 45 min, or 105 minutes. The calculation ignores dates, so it is designed for durations within a single day or a single overnight span.

Overnight spans and equal times

When the end time is earlier than the start time, the tool assumes the end is on the next day. A night shift from 22:15 to 06:45 therefore lasts 8 h 30 min, the same as the daytime example. If both times are identical, the result is 0 minutes rather than 24 hours. For a duration of a full day or longer, use the Date Difference Calculator for the whole days and add the remaining hours separately.

Breaks, decimals and clock changes

The result is the raw span between two clock readings; lunch or other unpaid breaks are not subtracted. Use the Work Hours Calculator for a shift with a break, and the Hours to Decimal Calculator when a timesheet needs 8.5 instead of 8 h 30 min. Because no date or time zone is entered, a night that includes a daylight saving change is not adjusted: a real shift from 22:15 to 06:45 on that night may be one hour longer or shorter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a duration of more than 24 hours?

Split it into whole days and a remainder. Use the Date Difference Calculator for the days, multiply them by 24 hours, and add the clock-time span from this tool. Entering the same time twice here gives 0 h 0 min, because the tool treats equal times as no elapsed time rather than a full day.

How do I turn 8 h 30 min into decimal hours for a timesheet?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours: 30 minutes is 0.5 hour, so 8 h 30 min is 8.5 hours, and the total of 510 minutes divided by 60 gives the same figure. The Hours to Decimal Calculator does this conversion directly.

Can I subtract a lunch break?

Not in this tool, which measures the raw span between two clock readings. Use the Work Hours Calculator to subtract a break from one shift, or the Time Card Calculator to add up a whole week of shifts with breaks. For a quick check, 09:00 to 17:30 minus a 30-minute break is 8 hours.
