Time Unit Converter

Convert time between milliseconds, seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and years with fixed factors.

Calculations happen locally. We do not send your values to our server.

Example

A day is 86,400 seconds and a week is 168 hours. One year here is 365.25 days, about 52.17857143 weeks, and one million seconds works out at about 11.57407407 days.

Calculation method

Every unit is normalised to seconds. Days, hours, minutes and weeks use fixed factors, while the year is the Julian year of exactly 365.25 days, the average length once leap years are included.

Important notes

Calendar months are not offered because their length varies from 28 to 31 days, and a calendar year is 365 or 366 days rather than the average used here. For a specific period between two dates, count the actual dates with the Date Difference Calculator. Leap seconds and daylight saving changes are ignored.

Fixed units and the length of a year

Seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks convert with fixed factors: a day is 86,400 seconds and a week is 168 hours. A year cannot be fixed the same way, because calendar years have 365 or 366 days. This converter uses the Julian year of exactly 365.25 days, the average including leap years, so 1 year is 365.25 days or about 52.17857143 weeks. For a specific calendar period, count the actual dates with the Date Difference Calculator instead.

Large and small numbers made readable

Very large second counts become easier to picture in days: one million seconds is about 11.57407407 days, while one billion seconds is more than 31 years. In the other direction, 90 minutes is 1.5 hours, which is the form often needed for timesheets and billing. Milliseconds are useful for software, audio and reaction times, where 250 ms is a quarter of a second. Months are not offered because their length varies from 28 to 31 days.

Decimal hours are not clock time

A result of 1.5 hours means one and a half hours, or 1 h 30 min, not 1 h 50 min. Likewise, 2.5 hours is 150 minutes. When a result must be written as hours and minutes, multiply the decimal part by 60. Clocks may also be adjusted by leap seconds and daylight saving changes, which these fixed conversions ignore. For converting worked hours and minutes into decimal payroll hours, the Hours to Decimal Calculator shows both forms side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a year 365.25 days?

Because it is the average once leap years are counted, which makes unit conversion consistent. It is not a particular calendar year: 1 year converts to 365.25 days or about 52.17857143 weeks here, while the year you are actually living through has 365 or 366 days.

Is 1.5 hours the same as 1 h 50 min?

No. A decimal result of 1.5 hours means one and a half hours, that is 1 h 30 min, and 2.5 hours is 150 minutes. To write a decimal result as hours and minutes, multiply the part after the point by 60. The Hours to Decimal Calculator shows both forms side by side.

What are the big numbers useful for?

Making long spans easier to picture. One million seconds is about 11.57407407 days, while one billion seconds is more than 31 years. At the other end, milliseconds suit software, audio and reaction times, where 250 ms is a quarter of a second, and 90 minutes converts to the 1.5 hours that timesheets often want.
